Coaching Philosophy

Attitude towards competition and winning:

  • I believe that tough competition should be embraced. I want my athletes to be motivated to step up their level of play when competing with a top team versus admitting defeat before the game even starts. Improvement cannot occur without challenges. It is the most rewarding feeling to finally block/dig that one really good hitter on a top team and then get excited in the huddle after the point. Those are the plays/games the girls will remember. Win or lose, I want my girls to improve and give their very best every time they step onto the court.

Approach to player development (skills, fitness, mental)

  • I try to incorporate as many game-like drills and scrimmages into practice as possible. Volleyball is a game of quick adjustments and game-like play will create opportunities for the girls to develop their volleyball IQ and stamina. This will also put the girls in scenarios where they will have to be mentally tough and overcome adversity. When a tournament game is 23-24, the girls will not have to panic because they have encountered this exact scenario multiple times in practice. How we practice is how we will play in games.
  • Every girl’s best is different. My job as a coach is to help them achieve their personal best. Mistakes will happen. Volleyball is a game filled with them. I want to encourage my girls to use mistakes as learning opportunities. Instead of being defeated after getting aced, I want my passers to say to themselves, “That was a good serve, but she doesn’t get to ace me again.” I will also ask my passers how they will make the next pass better so they can learn from that error (adjust my platform’s angle or communicate my seam earlier etc.) The girls are here to learn the game of volleyball. At the end of the day, I want them to feel proud of the fact that they gave their best effort and improved their personal best.

Importance of teamwork and character building

  • In volleyball, individual players cannot succeed without their teammates. Hitters and setters must connect, and passers must give good balls to the setters etc. We each have a role that contributes to the team’s overall success. We celebrate together and we lose together. Adversity is not so scary when you aren’t facing it alone. Volleyball creates a space where these girls can learn to trust, work for a goal bigger than personal glory, and practice accountability.

Personal Touch

I am going into my 3rd year as a self-employed full-time wedding photographer. I live with two of my former college volleyball teammates (volleyball friendships are for life!!!) and my very fluffy cat, Nova. This past summer my family moved from Milwaukee down to Indianapolis because both my parents accepted calls to teach at a high school down there. Reading is one of my favorite pastimes and how I unwind every night. I love finding local coffee shops and at every tournament you will see me with a cup of coffee. I play in lots of local volleyball leagues and seriously cannot get enough of volleyball.
